Drug Policy Network South East Europe (DPNSEE): 1st General Assembly in Belgrade

On November 29th and 30th, 2016 the first regular annual General Assembly of the Drug Policy Network in South East Europe (DPNSEE) was held at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade.

DPNSEE is an initiative of NGOs from the countries of South East Europe, the creation of which was among the main objectives of the project “Stengthening NGO capacity and promoting public health and human rights oriented drug policy in South East Europe”. Network organizations are primarily providers of preventive, therapeutic, harm reduction and rehabilitation services. The Network aims to create close and constructive relationships through open and objective dialogue with experts, key policy makers in national governments, regional bodies, and international organisations in order to promote humane and effective drug policies.

Organization ‘Diogenis’ Drug Policy Dialogue was present and actively involved in the whole processes as a founding member and the lead organization of this project, supported by the European Commission.

On this occasion member-organizations from Albania, Bosnia and Herzagovina, Greece, FYROM, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia gathered and – through a constructive meeting – discussed regarding the past and ongoing developments of the Network’s progress and exchanged ideas for future action in the drug policy field. The Assembly opened with a greeting by Mr. Pekicem Milan, Head of the anti-drug office of the Republic of Serbia who honored this initiative with his presence and stated his support for the Network’s activities and the importance of this regional cooperation for better addressing the drug situation in individual countries.

During the Assembly operational and financial reports concerning the work implemented in 2016 as well as the Action Plan for 2017 were presented and adopted. Moreover, elections for the new Board took place, which resulted in changes in its recommendation. Following the elections, member organizations agreed on some needed changes and amendements to the Statutes of the Network that will contribute to the best functioning of the Network. Moreover, one more non-governmental organization from Athens, Greece has been introduced to the Network as a member-organization. The Hellenic Liver Patients’ Association, ‘Prometheus’ was welcomed to DPNSEE by the Assembly.
