On April 7 (World Health Day), the open informational meeting on the occasion of the UN General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS 2016) organized by DIOGENIS-Drug Policy Dialogue, concluded in great success, with more than 50 participants.
The event was attended by representatives from organizations, civil society, local authorities, secondary education, professionals working in the field of prevention, harm reduction, treatment and social reintegration, and from the office of the National Coordinator for Drugs.
At the 59th Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), held in Vienna from 14 to 22 March 2016, after intensive negotiations, member-states agreed in this document, which will be submitted for approval to the UN Special Session of the General Assembly (UNGASS 2016) on drugs, to be held in New York 19-21 April 2016.

On the initiative of International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) – a global network of NGOs that focus on issues related to drug production, trafficking and use – civil society organisations, representing drug policy expertise and affected communities worldwide, released a statement in order to express their serious concerns about the preparations and draft outcome document for the upcoming UNGASS on the world drug problem in April 2016, stressing out that governments failed to recognize the negative impact of the current drug policies.
Following the annual session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in March 2015 intensive work has started to develop proposals and recommendations of the UN member states which should be discussed and approved by the Special General Assembly on Drugs. The Special Session of the General Assembly will take place in New York from 19 to 21 April 2016 (UNGASS 2016). Already some countries expressed initial thoughts on the content of conclusions and recommendations they expect from the UN Special Session of General Assembly. Read more
